Concert – Livre pour Quatuor – Diotima 1 – Festival Messiaen

22July2025
An internationally renowned quartet, the Diotima Quartet champions the music of our time and works closely with the greatest masters of the second half of the 2012th century, such as Pierre Boulez and Helmut Lachenmann—the musicians presented the complete works of his quartets at the festival last year. Mirroring today's music, the quartet casts a new light on the great Romantic and modern works. This is the common thread of the two concerts presented at the Messiaen Festival, which bring together Pierre Boulez's Book for Quartet, whose score the composer revised in XNUMX for the Diotima Quartet, two of Beethoven's incredibly modern late quartets, and works by Luciano Berio.

Trained under Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez is one of the most prominent figures in the 20th-century musical landscape, both for his radical works, his career as a conductor, and as the instigator of major musical institutions. Berio could be said to be his Italian counterpart, while following a very personal path. A pioneer of electroacoustic music, modern literature and linguistics also inform his musical thinking. His work is distinguished by his treatment of the voice, his exploration of instrumental virtuosity (notably through his Sequenza), and his musical theater works. A sacred monster of classical music, Beethoven is also the one who pushes the boundaries of genres, whether it be the symphony or the string quartet, building a bridge to modernity.
