Concert – Terre et ciel – Festival Messiaen

20July2025
La Grave
Barbara Hannigan and Bertrand Chamayou perform Messiaen's Songs of Earth and Sky, John Zorn's Jumalattaret, and pieces by Scriabin. An intense program of mystical lyricism, vocal challenges, and explorations of sacred and personal connections.
After Poèmes pour Mi, the two artists performed Chants de terre et de ciel, composed in 1938 in Petichet's summer house in Isère. Messiaen himself wrote the lyrics for the work, which is associated with his personal life: it celebrates marital love with his first wife Claire Delbos, the birth of their child Pascal, but also divine love.
New York-based composer John Zorn used excerpts from the Finnish epic Kalevala to compose Jumalattaret (2012), a song cycle celebrating nine goddesses from Sami shamanism. Formidably challenging for its performer, Jumalattaret employs a variety of musical techniques and genres, moving from folk-inspired lyrical simplicity to more complex atonal and textural pyrotechnics.
Two works for solo piano complete the program, Poème-nocturne and Vers la flamme by Alexander Scriabin, a Russian composer readily described as a mystic.
