Conférence : Surveillance des glaciers alpins
18August2025
What does monitoring earthquakes and landslides on Alpine glaciers involve? With Agnès Helmstetter from the Institute of Earth Sciences.
Seismic signal analysis makes it possible to locate the source of an earthquake and determine its magnitude. The sensors detect not only earthquakes, but also all phenomena that produce ground vibrations: rockfalls, snow avalanches, landslides, serac falls, subglacial water flows, rapid sliding at the base of glaciers, eruptions, and explosions.
Scientific research allows us to study how these events interact with each other and how they are influenced by external factors, such as global warming.
A friendly drink is offered at the end of the conference.
