Festival Olivier Messiaen au Pays de la Meije

20July27July2025
La Grave
From July 19 to 27, 2025, the Messiaen Festival in the Pays de la Meije will meet you at La Grave, in the Hautes-Alpes and in Isère with a program honoring two composers: Pierre Boulez and Luciano Berio.
Founded in 1998, the Messiaen Festival in the Pays de la Meije is today an unmissable event for contemporary music.

It is in homage to the composer Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) who drew his inspiration from nature and landscapes, that the Messiaen Festival in the Pays de la Meije was created by Gaëtan Puaud and the Olivier Messiaen Association in the Pays de la Meije bringing together enthusiasts of the composer. Since then, the Festival has taken place every year at the end of July, in La Grave, a mecca for concerts facing the majestic glaciers of the Meije, or in the Briançonnais valley and in Isère, in Saint-Théoffrey where Olivier Messiaen rests. Places dear to the composer, allowing, beyond musical discovery, to associate music with an exceptional natural heritage.

The Messiaen Festival in the Land of Meije has welcomed the greatest artists, including former students of Olivier Messiaen such as Pierre Boulez, François-Bernard Mâche, Alain Louvier, George Benjamin, Tristan Murail, Roger Muraro… For more than twenty years, it has also demonstrated its commitment to creation by pursuing an ambitious musical commission policy. More than forty new works have been presented and written by renowned composers, invited in residence, including Gilbert Amy, George Benjamin, Pierre Boulez, Philippe Manoury, Michel Fano, Bruno Mantovani, Tristan Murail, Michaël Lévinas, but also Franck Bedrossian, François Meïmoun and Thomas Lacôte.

Since 2019, the Messiaen Festival in the Pays de la Meije is directed by Bruno Messina, who succeeded Gaëtan Puaud. The theme chosen, in resonance with the world of Olivier Messiaen, the common thread of the program, highlights the works of the master, his disciples, but also young composers, thus offering the public a world tour of contemporary music.
