Formes et Passions – Chantourneur et sculpteur
Marcel GRESSE, a fretwork craftsman in Bourg d'Oisans, creates unique pieces all cut and sculpted in solid wood. He uses an ancestral method “Antarsia” whose art is to bring a subject to life.
Passionate about all forms of art since my early childhood, I found in the "Antarsia" method a concentration of approaches where I can invent myself and give free rein to my imagination and creativity. Each artist has their own technique when approaching art with different styles. The technique is just a starting point to let your artistic creativity wander.
What is the “Antarsia” method?
It is a technique of wood art meaning “marquetry” or called “wood mosaic”. Each sculpture includes several pieces of wood of various colors, cut and assembled in the manner of a “puzzle”. It is also a derivative of the principle of the puzzle.
After a project has been laid out on paper, the significant elements are cut out, prepared, assembled and then glued together. If the different elements are cut out from the same board, this is called “segmentation”.
“Antarsia” is a mosaic composed of different types of wood that acts as a tint (as for marquetry). I use artificial colors (stains, inks, watercolors) to highlight the subject and the woods of our regions (lime, poplar, plane tree, Swiss pine, walnut, ash, larch and fruit trees).
Unlike marquetry, the “Antarsia” method places emphasis on relief to give a three-dimensional effect to each piece of wood cut, sanded, assembled and then painted.
This art form is fascinating because it allows you to create many objects on various themes (animals, flowers, characters, etc.). This art requires very little tools and space compared to cabinetmaking. It is easier and less expensive to undertake a first approach to a creation.
I invite you to try this art in my workshop!
