When you arrive at Alpe d'Huez, take the direction “Tourist Office” then “Quartier Bergers”. You pass in front of the altiport and drive on the “route du col de Sarenne".
Cross the pass and descend into the Ferrand valley. Let yourself go to the village of Clavans le Bas then Mizöen. At the end of a slightly steep descent, you find the D1091. Pass over the Chambon dam, then continue to Freney d'Oisans.
In Le Freney, shortly after the Avia petrol station, turn right onto the D211a to go up towards Auris. Follow the road to the hamlet of La Balme. The return to La Garde en Oisans is via the "Route de la Roche". A narrow road punctuated by 3 tunnels, cut into the side of the cliff. The panorama over the Bourg d'Oisans plain is striking.
Arriving at La Garde, you find the D211 which will take you to Bourg d'Oisans.
VARIANT
You can take this route in the other direction, turning right at La Garde, towards Auris en Oisans on the D211a. In this direction, you will only climb a third of the 21 legendary bends towards Alpe d'Huez (at the end of the route, you will do the entire route downhill), but the climb of the balconies of Auris and the climb of the col de Sarenne for Mizoën are just as interesting!
ANECDOTE
On July 18, 2013, the Tour de France signed a piece of bravery for the riders of the Tour de France.
The new route takes the climb of Alpe d'Huez twice: 21 + 21 = 42 bends!! A first climb, a descent via the col de Sarenne to reach Bourg d'Oisans to finish the bill with a second ration of 21 turns...
