Sustainable tourism

The Petrifying Fountain is a unique resurgence in Oisans. It is not only a waterfall, but also a tufa. Tufas are rare ecosystems in the mountains and constitute priority habitats for Europe. This is why this tufa is protected under a prefectural decree for the protection of biotopes (APPB) and integrated into the European Natura 2000 network.
These environments are fragile, do not leave the path (even if it is tempting to take photos)!

Discover the Petrifying Fountain waterfall, a true refuge of biodiversity housing rare and endangered ecosystems. On the balcony path leading to the waterfall, you will observe a panorama of the Chambon lake and the Uissan peaks!

ROUTE
To get to the starting point:
The start of the hike is located at the Aymes car park, at Mizoën. The road between the village of Mizoën and the hamlet of Aymes is winding and high, the crossings can be difficult (over 2.2 km). You can observe a beautiful view of the Chambon dam. Once you arrive at Aymes, at the end of the hamlet, a small, narrow, unpaved track leads to the parking lot.
It is possible to park in the hamlet and walk to the car park.

From the Aymes car park, follow the direction of Les Clots or the GR 54 C (red and white). You will then begin your hike on a track passing through a shaded area.
Shortly after, this track narrows and the trees become rarer. The path is on a balcony. The route includes a few passages where the path is narrower: cables are at your disposal to help you in your progress.
Over the first 2 kilometres, the climb is rather moderate and gradual. From the 2nd kilometre, the climb becomes steeper but still gradual over 1,23 km, until you arrive at the hamlet of Clots. Before the latter, you will pass near Lake Lovitel, where you can make a small detour.
Between Lake Lovitel and the Clots refuge, you can take another detour passing by the orientation table located at the top of the rocky promontory next to the lake.
Located on a flat area, the hamlet of Clots where you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that the place offers, in addition to its view of the Petrifying Fountain and the Meije.
From the hamlet to reach the summit of the Cascade, you must always continue on the GR 54 C route. The path is steeper and more stony.
The waterfall is a protected area: do not leave the path.
Just before reaching the summit, you will have to cross small streams, be careful the ground can be slippery!
Once at the top of the waterfall, the route is a round trip, you can retrace your steps to reach the car park. Once at the top of the waterfall, you have the option of continuing on the GR towards the Plateau d'Emparis.
On your return, take a break at the refuge in the hamlet of Clots, which offers meals, to make the most of the idyllic setting of this place.
