Ornon

La vallée de la Lignarre

This vast, isolated valley, nestled against the ridges of the Taillefer massif, is the gateway to the south. In the past, southern products passed through the col d’Ornon at 1 m. People lived there from silver-lead deposits and slate extraction.
Departing from Bourg d'Oisans, this circuit is approximately 44 km round trip.

As soon as you leave the main road, you can reach tiny mountain villages via spectacular little roads. This is the case of Oulles, which was only connected to the road network in the 1960s! Oulles experienced significant mining activity but the First World War put a definitive end to the enterprise. With its seven inhabitants, Oulles is today the smallest commune in the department. You must leave your car, motorcycle or bicycle at the entrance to the village to walk along the pretty road that climbs alongside the houses and hamlets.

Coming down fromOulles, you will set out to attack Villard-Reymond. On the road, a gourmet stop is a must: the Bergerie de la Lignarre in the hamlet of La Palud in Ornon. Visits, tastings, and filling your basket with good Oisans products are on the program. Villard-Reymond, in addition to the magnificent landscapes, you will discover the génépi and berry crops. Genepi, this aromatic plant from mountainous regions, is used to make the famous liqueur of the same name. Chantal offers us the plant in pots, dried, or as a liqueur. You can visit her plantations, her gardens, and her laboratory where she prepares liqueurs, aperitifs, syrups, jams, and condiments.

A little further towards the Col du Solude you can meet Cécile at the Champ Perché farm. She experiments with high-altitude market gardening, sells her vegetables all summer and transforms vegetables and wild pickings into original condiments for the rest of the year.

And if the weather permits, you will reach the Solude pass and its magnificent viewpoint, to then join Villard-Notre-Dame along a pastoral road that will leave you with memories. Be careful, however, this road is not paved, and should only be used in good weather and conditions. Villard-Notre-Dame is a charming little hilltop village, take the time to discover its charms on foot.

You can also stop at Marieke's sculpture workshop “Terra Rêve”, before going back down to earth, that is to say Bourg-d'Oisans and its plain, 800 m lower.
