Les portes de l'Oisans
The little-known Basse Romanche valley, at the foot of imposing walls crossed by the RD1091, deserves our attention.
Departing from Bourg d'Oisans, this circuit is approximately 38 km round trip.
Meet at the gates of Oisans, in Rioupéroux, to discover the Romanche museum. This museum will reveal to you the geological past of the valley but also the extraordinary industrial history which completely remodeled it in the XNUMXth century.
and XNUMXth centuries. You can also stop to discover two craft workshops: the art of mosaic in Laurence Chapelon-Chain's workshop, and sculpture on wood, stone and plaster in Pierre Gioria's workshop.
You will then cross Livet where you will easily recognize the Keller and Leleux pavilion, this strange house on stilts that became famous in the film Les Rivières Pourpres. It belonged to the director of the metallurgical factory, Charles-Albert Keller, who thus had a breathtaking view of this entire industrial valley.
The commune of Livet and Gavet has a very discreet industry since not far from there an unusual nature takes over. Indeed, hidden behind the Rochetaillée forest, live… bison. Yes, you read correctly, bison! We are talking about this solid one-ton bovid whose 70 million individuals populated the plains of North America before the arrival of Europeans. To visit the farm, you must stop at the Libellule Inn and report your arrival, then walk to the bison enclosure. Bison are wild animals, so visiting breeding sites is regulated. To better discover them, take a pony ride around the property following a magnificent circuit. For those cravings, the inn prepares cobbler
grilled bison, terrine or dried meat.
Not far from the farm, you will have the opportunity to discover an astonishing section of Roman road dug high into the cliff. The road was high because the valley was once submerged by Lake Saint Laurent which suddenly emptied
in the 500th century and devastated Grenoble. Signs will tell you about this episode in the history of Oisans. To get there, park in Rochetaillée, near the Les Touristes hotel. Go past the hotel (towards Bourg-d'Oisans), then follow the mountain bike trail markers for XNUMX m to the cliff.
