FOR THE BRIEF STORY
During the exploitation of the silver-lead mines of Chalanches, between 1767 and 1799, it is estimated that a quarter of the production was stolen by the miners, despite all the precautions taken (the ore had descended towards Allemond in sewn bags). To combat fraud, the mine managers called on the clergy on three occasions to organize “Monitoire ceremonies”. During the procession, a crucifix was pulled by the feet, symbolizing Christ's pain at the misdeeds of men. In front of each house, a prayer was said and the alleged fraudster was supposed to die within the year. A clandestine foundry was later found in a room adjoining the sacristy, as well as slag in the floor of the church ofAllemond !
