Villard-Reculas

Route panoramique : la route de la Confession

First access road to Villard-Reculas, the Confession Road is exceptional for: its construction, a challenge for the time, its exposure between two cliffs, its legend, reference to its name and the breathtaking view that it still offers.
On the road between Huez and Villard-Reculas, hanging on the edge of the cliff, a mysterious sign announces the Pas de la Confession, because it was indeed with a clear conscience that it was better to approach this terrible sheer passage!
This is the legend of this road, only pure souls could risk themselves on this narrow road, exposed to falling rocks (chamois like the slopes above your heads) and intimidating in case of vertigo. The Villarais therefore said they were people of good virtue. An oratory at the start of the road, on the Huez side, was a mandatory stop to confess before setting off.
But at the time it was above all a real breath of fresh air for the villagers since previously only the path of “Vieille morte” (hamlet in the Romanche valley) allowed to reach the valley. Impassable in winter, it was then necessary to pass above the village to reach the mountain pastures of Huez (hence the Alpe d'Huez) and the village of Huez, from where a quieter path started.
Until 1980 (yes!) this single road served Villard Reculas. Then the town was able to benefit from numerous supports to finally see the modern road built (link with Allemond).

The landscape is magnificent but be careful by car and on foot, winding and narrow road, difficult crossings.
