Villard-Notre-Dame

Route panoramique : la route de Villard-Notre-Dame

Such a challenge to verticality leaves you somewhat speechless. This is not the Bolivian “carretera de la muerte” but it is better to drive with the greatest caution. The tunnels are simple blind galleries dug into the rock.
The disturbing proximity of the cliff imposes calm! But these few thrills are the price to pay to reach the peaceful village of Villard-Notre-Dame.
The magnificent little departmental road 219 is one of the most picturesque in Oisans. Its construction began in 1937 under the leadership of Joseph Paganon, deputy for Isère, senator and minister; it was completed in 1939.
Carved initially into a vertical rock face, with its picturesque tunnels, it constitutes a superb belvedere over the Romanche and Vénéon valley.
After passing through the forest, it allows you to admire the high mountain sites surrounding the village at the end of the route. In one of the last bends, the most beautiful view is the one which allows you to discover the succession of the lower Vénéon valley and the wild valley of the torrent which descends from the Rochail glacier with its superb waterfalls.

Drive carefully, narrow and winding road with difficult crossings.
