Refuge du Lac du Pavé

Villar-d'Arêne
– Mountain hut
In the heart of a high mountain cirque between Pavé, Roche Méane and Pic Gaspard, on the banks of a glacial lake, this high-altitude refuge offers a journey with Himalayan airs in one of the most secret and wild valleys of the Ecrins massif.
Going up to Lac du Pavé is first of all a magnificent hike and then gets up close to the high mountains.

Located in the heart of a majestic cirque, the new Pavé refuge is set in a striking setting…. High mountains in their purest form.
Recently renovated, and guarded for the first time this summer, the new Pavé refuge will welcome mountaineers, climbers, seasoned hikers and all nature lovers. You will discover on site a refuge whose design was dictated by the environment that surrounds it, combining comfort and sobriety.
Pauline, the caretaker, will do everything she can to ensure you have a pleasant time in the mountains!

Conviviality and good humor await you!

The refuge provides quick access to a large number of mountaineering and climbing routes: from the easiest to the most difficult.

The most popular summit is the Pic Nord des Cavales: it is one of the most beautiful easy mountaineering routes in the Ecrins massif on excellent quality granite. Pointe Emma, which has the same characteristics, is also climbed by many roped parties. On these two summits, there are many routes of varying difficulty and both offer remarkable views of the Etançons valley and the south face of the MeijeThe Pointe des Chamois, next to the Pointe Emma, is perfect for a quick introductory run.

Fans of the great races of the great wild Oisans will turn to Pic Gaspard and its south-southeast ridge: the famous Devies-Gervasuti.

Vertical enthusiasts will head to the foot of the south face of the Pavé. There are three routes there, including one of the most difficult climbs in the massif with a 7b at an altitude of 3500 m!

Long-distance climbers will embark on the beautiful and demanding Pavé traverse – Meije oriental. A must in the area.

For snow races, the Col du Pavé out and back is ideal. From the pass, it is also possible to reach the Promontoire refuge or vice versa (serious race: steep and cracked glacial terrain).

Finally, we will not forget the Grande Ruine and the famous Col du Diable. Due to global warming, this large corridor is hardly used anymore and you have to look for good snow conditions very early in the season.

Access: IGN map: 3436 ETGeographic coordinates: 44.985904 N – 6.328580 E The trail starts below the hamlet of Pied du Col, where you have to take the passable track that starts after the Pas de l'Ane lodge, the car park being at the bottom of the valley. The trail first takes the famous GR® 54 (Tour de l'Oisans), to quickly branch off to the right towards the Valfourcheon plan, where you find a junction for two possible accesses to the refuge. The trail that goes to the right below the moraine is faster but it takes cable passages and is not recommended for people who are prone to vertigo or who are inexperienced. The normal route, without difficulty, continues straight towards the Col des Cavales then after a fairly steep climb, turns right to return by a balcony path towards the majestic peaks of Pavé and Gaspard. We then arrive at the refuge of Lac du Pavé (2843 m). 4 hours of walking / 1150 m of altitude difference.
