On the Plateau des Lacs du Taillefer, the clear waters of Lac Fourchu form a curious fork in what looks like a vast arctic tundra. This remarkable and fragile site is one of the most visited in Oisans.

You will have to walk up to 2 m to admire Lac Fourchu. Surrounded by moors, peat bogs, scree and a dozen other lakes, this wild nature flourishes under the gaze of the powerful summit of Taillefer (114 m). Once here, you will only want one thing: to go and discover the riches that this vast plateau has to offer.

PLEASE NOTE: In July and August, the Plateau des Lacs du Taillefer is very busy. We advise you to avoid these periods.

The Taillefer refuge 

Just 2 short kilometers from Lac Fourchu, the Taillefer refuge welcomes you for a beautiful night in the mountains. You will have the choice between sleeping in the dormitory, in the yurt or in your own bivouac. This establishment also offers a catering, supply and refreshment service. Don't forget to inform the caretaker of your visit before going there.

The Plateau des Lacs du Taillefer, where Lac Fourchu is located, is an exceptional natural site, classified Natura 2000. This place, as splendid as it is fragile, is subject to special regulations to preserve its biodiversity and protect its riches.

Where to find Lac Fourchu? 

Lac Fourchu is located on the Plateau des Lacs du Taillefer, at the foot of the eponymous summit. To get there, several departures are possible from Oisans.

Practical information on Lac Fourchu

The ideal periods are the months of June andOctober. 
En July and in August, the crowd is very high. CThis is why we advise you to avoid this period. in order to protect this sensitive site and to benefit from the calm of this unique place. 

From the hamlet of Grenoniereor a Ornon, count eabout 2 h 30 walking, depending on your pace. The route is considered moderate for experienced hikers. It is 4,8 km long with an elevation gain of 822 m. 

In order to preserve the fragile ecosystem of this site, bivouacs are prohibited except in the bivouac area reserved for this purpose, near Lac de la Veche, and only from 19 p.m. to 9 a.m.  

You can also camp at the Taillefer refuge, for a fee of €5 per tent. Don't forget to contact the warden to reserve your pitch.

The tray matters a beautiful diversity of animals :

  • 114 species of birds, whose emblematic are the black grouse, le short-toed eagle, le speckled nutcracker and the northern wheatear;
  • 32 mammal species, whose the gray wolf, the gmurine rand, the Plittle mouse, the bEuropean arbastelle classified as being of community interest because it is threatened with extinction;
  • 8 species of reptiles, as the green and yellow snake and viviparous lizard ;
  • 5 species of amphibians, whose gred renouille, le Alpine newt et la tachetée salamander ;
  • 8 species of dragonflies, as the leucorrhine doubtful and has iteschne of rushes. 

On the Plateaux des Lacs du Taillefer, scientists have counted 645 plant species, including 72 heritage species, i.e. rare, protected, or whose living environments are in danger.  

Among the many plants present, we can cite: mountain avens, Alpine aster, round-headed garlic, ribbonwort, round-leaved sundew, common butterwort, houseleek, Alpine toadflax, Alpine lily, vanilla orchid, ferruginous rhododendron, moss campion, horsetail, wild thyme and, much rarer, cotton grass.  

The paths are accessible for experienced hikers. Uin good physical condition is therefore recommended for young children due to the height difference. 

Mountain lakes, home to specific flora and fauna, are highly vulnerable ecosystems, sensitive to degradation such as bank erosion and sediment resuspension. They are particularly exposed to the effects of pollution, particularly that caused by sunscreens and organic pollutants. To best preserve these natural treasures, Swimming and water activities are strictly prohibited there.. 

The multiple lakes from the Taillefer plateau, whose le Lac Fourchu, is of glacial origin. In fact, iThey were formed after the glaciers retreated, about 12 years ago, leaving many depressions where wateris accumulateée. 

No, there are no food outlets at Lac Fourchu. It is therefore strongly recommended to bring water and provisions.  

However, if you contact the Taillefer refuge a few days in advance, the warden will be able to prepare a good lunch for you. This refuge is located 2 km below the lake.
