Take to the heights to admire the extraordinary landscapes of Oisans

Whether it's during a steep hike, a historic, confidential or dizzying road, or even when crossing a footbridge, in Oisans, you'll discover breathtaking panoramas.

The roads of vertigo

Oisans, a land of vertical mountains, has some of the most spectacular roads in France. Steep roads that send shivers down the spines of those who are not used to heights, but which offer breathtaking views.

The road to La Roche

À Auris-en-Oisans From 1902, the inhabitants sought to open up the village by opening a road from Armentier-le-Haut (hamlet of La Garde-en-Oisans). This road, carved into the cliffside, is one of the most spectacular routes in Oisans. Very close to the cliff face on one side, with a stunning view on the other, it proudly overlooks the Bourg-d'Oisans plain. This road, also described as the vertigo road, is sure to amaze drivers and cyclists.

The road to Villard-Notre-Dame

Another equally impressive road, on the opposite side of the Route de la Roche, was started in 1935 in order to connect Villard-Notre-Dame in Bourg-d'Oisans. It winds along the mountainside: narrow and winding, punctuated by passages through small, dark tunnels. Taking this road is already an experience in itself, but the view it offers over the Bourg-d'Oisans plain is spectacular.

The road to Bérarde

A few decades ago, to get to La Bérarde, you had to travel the last 12 kilometers between Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans and La Bérarde on foot or by mule, on a narrow path sometimes climbing up to 30% inclination! Thanks to the Touring Club de France, the carriage road was built in stages from 1913 to finally reach La Bérarde in July 1921. A dizzying road without a doubt, with an alternation of simply unique landscapes: rocky spurs, streams, meadows, high peaks, waterfalls, glaciers… A real open book of geography.

The Step of Confession

Why such a name? According to legend, only pure souls could risk themselves on this narrow road, paralyzing in case of vertigo and exposed to falling rocks (chamois are fond of the slopes above it). The Villarais therefore considered themselves to be of good virtue. The oratory at the start of the road, on the Huez side, was a mandatory stop to confess before setting off. It was the only road serving the village until 1980. We understand better why Villard is called "Reculas".
